Great walk, apart from . . . .
The attached map shows our GPS track (red line) for part of
the walk which included the one-mile-long unpleasant bit.
We came over Longstone Edge (A) and dropped down the other
side – steep but OK. All went well until we left the road
comong up from Rowland (B). There was a footpath sign but
the way soon degenerated into something between an
indistinct patb and no path at all.We scrambled through brambles, long grass and tree branches, over
rocks, and minor ups and downs until at point C we left the line
of the lower contouring path on the map and headed uphill to join
the higher (theoretical) path, abandoning this too at point D.
Eventually at point E we reached the top of the edge, joining
the path dotted green on the map, along the top of the
Disused Workings, which would perhaps have been easier than
trying to go below them. From here an easy track led
back to the start.Yes mountaineers should be able to cope with this sort of
thing easily, but some of us are not as agile as we were 50
years ago!Andy.

Andy SmithKeymasterThere are roadworks at Hathersage and there may be delays so if you are coming through there on your way to the Thursday walk, please allow extra time for your journey. If you are going to be a little late, let us know via Rosy’s moble (on Club address list). Andy
Andy SmithKeymasterFrom responses to my message of 13th October I have
established that a handful of members (they will know who
they are) have not been receiving messages from the domain
castlemountaineering.com
For this reason they were not receiving messages from the
Message Board. After consultation with Digital Nomads, our
website provider, I have established that the most likely
reason for this is that at some point those members
identified a CMC message as Spam or Junk. This was probably
done inadvertently, assuming that the member affected still
wanted to receive CMC emails. I won’t go into the technical
details (though I will pass these on to anyone who is
interested) but the result is that if you do that, you will
be banned from receiving any more from the CMC. Digital
Nomads are able to reverse this ban if requested and this
has been done for those members currently affected by this
problem, so they should receive this message. The two points to remember are:
(1) Take care not to mark any CMC emails as Spam or Junk.
(2) If you become aware that you are not receiving messages
from the Message Board, let me know so that I can notify
Digital Nomads for them to rectify the problem.Andy
Andy SmithKeymasterPlease don’t post the password on the Messageboard, which can be viewed by the public. It is available to Club members on the Members only page. Thanks. Andy
Andy SmithKeymasterI have put the password on the Members Only page of the website, You need to be logged in to see this. Andy

Andy SmithKeymasterLast Thursday I took part in a teleconference using Zoom
and it worked very well. There were 12 participants
(including one in Australia). 10 were on video, one audio
only and one on telephone. (It was a of the meeting of the
committee of the British Antarctic Survey Club). I think
it could work for a virtual clubroom. Andy. 23 Mar 2020Andy SmithKeymasterAlison Uttley
Andy SmithKeymasterI couldn’t resist chipping in. It was 25th January 1986. Here is the account from my log:
“25 Jan. Brilliant day. Best in the Lake District for some time. Bright, sunny, clear, no wind, warm for January. Fair bit of snow on the tops. Good crampon snow, icy in places. Wore crampons virtually all day. Not enough for skiing. With John Barnard, Frank & Jennifer, Andrew Hindmoor, Mark Robinson, Simon Cook. Striding Edge, at the end descending into Nethermost Cove. Up Nethermost Gully. Enjoyable but quite easy snow, a little soft. Two interesting ice pitches. Steepest at the top but no cornice. Up to Helvellyn summit (crowded). Lunch. Simon and Mark stayed to do another gully. Helvellyn Lower Man. Ridge walking to Whiteside. Excellent view: Galloway, Lake District Peaks, Cross Fell, Ingleborough. On to Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson’s Dodd. Retraced to Stybarrow Dodd admiring views on the way. Greenside. John stayed to photograph the sunset. The rest of us to Hartside and back. Down to Nick Head, then down the path to the lead mine. Back to Glenridding in full moonlight. Both pubs shut!”
Have a nice weekend. AndyAndy SmithKeymasterOn the website, the Photo Competition information may be found as a sub-menu of Gallery. Andy
