More miles today! Firstly thanks to Elen for car shuffling us to the start.
Today we set out on a double objective, Phase 15 of the boundary walk from Thorpe to Waterfall, which would also add miles to the challenge week.
It’s a lovely area with some great views taking us on some paths we didn’t know, and by the looks of it, nobody else goes there either, especially after Ilam the paths were almost untraceable. However all Stiles/ gates were in place (just). Not so the school in Calton, one of the turning points but luckily ladies gardening pointed us in the right direction. (Don’t guidebook writers check these things?)
The walk was advertised as 8 miles with 1000feet of ascent, it was actually 10 miles with 1305 ft, just under 5 hours, so Mary can add 20 miles to the challenge total and Andy can tick the boundary walk box.

Linda: when are you coming to do your golf challenge?

Elen: does your Southern Boundary walk include Thorpe to Waterfall, as Vanda & I have already booked to do that, probably next Friday, as we’re at a wedding on the Saturday?

Mary; may be able t join you for part/all of your Monday walk, will know more tomorrow and let you know.
    Cheers

    Hi Gemma
Usually people will arrive from about 5pm, or earlier if good weather. Gordon has also posted that he can be there earlier if you ring him 07811986415.
I’m just back from a long flight from Turkey so may not make it.
    have a good evening

To start this topic off, here’s why the club has ALWAYS alternated between Tuesdays and Wednesdays for evening meets:
    1. Fairness. To allow people who may have work or other commitments on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to have at least a chance of participating once a fortnight, sticking to one night prevents this. This can also be very useful when trying to attract new members who are already committed to other activities during the week.
    2. Flexibility. Alternating between Tues & Weds allows for gaps between CMC ‘happenings’. For instance, Tuesday night climbing before away meets has been a way of preventing congestion of events. Without it, there would have been many instances of ”Weds climbing, Thurs club night event, Friday travelling to away meet.” Conversely Weds climbing after an away meet helps to ‘spread the load’ a bit.

I realise that having alternative nights means that people have to check each week what night the climbing is, but that’s what meets lists are for and anyway, participants have to check which crag is listed. Surely with todays modern communications, smartphones with reminders etc, its not difficult to check? Or resort to actually having a meets list pinned in a prominent position? Having said that, maybe we should put out a weekly reminder via messageboard/Facebook each week regarding the midweek meets?

This topic has been raised because of poor attendances on midweek meets this year, so perhaps we need to look at reasons why. I can’t believe that after 49 years of alternating midweek meets that this is a major cause.

It is adjacent to the Bryn Tyrch hotel, but as far as I know, the Snowdonia café is no more, unless it’s re-opened in the last couple of years.
