I had a word with Geoff recently and suggested an outdoor abseiling practice day to consolidate his indoor training which I would be happy to organise. Depending on demand and time it could concentrate just on basic safe practice abseiling on single ropes and double ropes, and perhaps go on to setting up retrievable abseils or abseiling past a knot. I thought the best date would be a Sunday close to the next outdoor climbing season so either March 20th or 27th. Lawrencefield would be an ideal venue. If you think this is a reasonable idea please feel free to put it on the meets programme.

Decathlon do several very well-reviewed, reasonably priced road bikes (e.g Triban RC500 priced at £500). New stock gets realised on their website at 11pm each day (yes that’s PM!) and you can order Click and Collect from their Sheffield store. I’ve just ordered one this way – though it’s going to be at least a week before it’s ready to collect.

There is a lot of nonsense out on the internet and as a retired ICU nurse manager I would recommend that people stick to the genuine NHS guidelines at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
I’ve just had this message from the Glen Feshie hut guardian. Disappointing but probably a sensible decision. I’ll probably give Scotland a miss as I need to be around in case of problems with my mum and father-in-law who are in the “vulnerable” category.

You’ll not be surprised to learn that due to the Coronavirus situation we have decided to close the Cottage for the next few months at least. Once the situation improves you’ll be able to re-book and any payment you’ve made can be transferred to a future booking. If you don’t wish to re-book a refund can be made.

Meet Report on rescheduled scramble (Saturday 8th February)
A few “storm dodgers” met a day early for the scramble up to Bleaklow via Torside Clough. We were a select but very multinational bunch with representation from Turkey, Japan, Yorkshire and “God’s Own Country” (Lancashire). Luckily the Pay and Display machine was out of order so we all saved the price of a pint. The scramble up Torside Clough was not quite what some members had expected involving lots of boulder hopping and multiple stream crossings. However we did discover several deep pools which would have been brilliant swimming spots in warmer weather – luckily no-one opted for an involuntary dip yesterday! Sunshine and a chilly wind greeted us when we emerged onto the Bleaklow plateau and after a short stop on the summit we looped round to the Wain Stones. A mountain hare was spotted – his brilliant white coat no longer seeming like effective camouflage in our era of global warming. Descent was by the Pennine Way path and the Longdendale Trail. Back at the carpark we completed the day with an inspection of campervans and discussion of the merits of different internal designs.Unfortunately “Storm Ciara” is forecast to hit our area on Sunday bringing rain and gale-force winds. I have reluctantly decided that the sensible thing is to CANCEL the walk/scramble on Sunday 9th February.
However the forecast for Saturday, 8th Feb is quite good so I am intending to do the walk on Saturday instead. If anyone else is interested I will be starting from Torside carpark at 10am on Saturday morning.I’d like to be included in the communal meal please. I can contribute something for dessert.
