Pat & MartinParticipant
Dear All,
Please accept Pat and my apologies for such a short appearance at the party. We were just looking forward to seeing the slides, when Windows gate-crashed at our end, and we were suddenly frozen out (despite our nice warm Santa Claus hats!). An attempt to re-join almost succeeded, but Windows had other ideas, and soon after, the laptop crashed. All attempts to restart left us staring at a blank screen with revolving circles – our eyes were following suit.
As you can tell, we have today re-joined “the land of the living”, and an important switch has been turned on that bans Windows from any interference between the hours of 17.00 and 08.00. In the meantime, we hope you had a jolly fine party, and also have a great Christmas and New Year.
Martin and Pat.
Pat & MartinParticipantHi John,
All my photos for my Desert Island slideshow were scanned slides, and at the time, my Minolta slide scanner was working well. Alas, it has since “kicked the bucket”, so I am busy researching replacement options. There aren’t many that give the required quality at a sensible price! Around £80 to £150 might get you a compact and quick “converter”, otherwise it seems £450 to £1,000+ for “top” quality.Good luck in your search!
Martin Whitaker.
Pat & MartinParticipantThanks, Russ. I guess I timed it so fine that there was no time for any questions, before we were Zoomed out. If anyone got “lost” part way through, and for those unable to “attend”, these were my 8 Desert Island climbs:-
1. The North Ridge of Piz Badile (3,308m/10,853ft), in the Bregaglia Alps of Switzerland. Grade IV+. About 3,200 feet of climbing. With Duncan P. in 1973.
2. A winter ascent of Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis, Scotland. Grade III. About 2,000 feet. With Marian B. in 1983.
3. The North Ridge of Mount Stuart (9,415 ft) in the Cascades, north-west U.S.A. Grade III, 5.4. With Pete C. (+ Pat and Pete S.) in 1993.
4. The Yellow Spur, Eldorado Canyon, Colorado, U.S.A. Grade 5.9, with 7 pitches. With Pat in 1994.
5. The South Face of Petit Grepon (12,100ft) in the Rocky Mountain N.P., Colorado, U.S.A. Grade III, 5.8 with 8-9 pitches. With Pat in 1996.
6. Jacobs Ladder, on Table Mountain in the Cape, South Africa. Grade 16, and 3 pitches. So good I’ve done it 3 times – first with Maurice W. in 1975, and twice with Pat in 1998.
7. An Arm and a Leg (E1, 5b), on Carrickcorie, Mull of Galloway, south-west Scotland. First ascent, with Iain W. in 2000.
8. Baboquivari (7,734ft) in southern Arizona, U.S.A. via the Southeast Arete, descending via the Forbes route and Great Ramp Grade 5.6. With Pat.I slipped in a few quick extras at the end, to satisfy gritstone addicts – The Unprintable (E1, 5b)(Stanage), Wuthering (E2, 5b)(Stanage) & Great North Road (HVS,5a)(Millstone).
I can’t believe how many fantastic climbs I had to leave out of my 8! Have to get a bigger island!!
Martin.
Pat & MartinParticipantMartin and Pat have now got around to downloading the Zoom software, so would like to participate in the next “test”, when there is one – please!
Keep well, everyone!
Pat and Martin.

Plenty of mountain walks, Via Ferrata, and sport climbing………. and sunshine! This area is easily accessible by train to Modane, as well as by road.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Clubroom.
Martin Whitaker.
Pat & MartinParticipantWe are very sad to hear this news. Sean was such a considerate and gentle person. Sincere condolences to his family. We will miss him, and his quiet humour. Pat and Martin.
Pat & MartinParticipantAnd the final two!

Pat & MartinParticipantThursday 4th July Meet Report
Fifteen humans and one small canine gathered at Shatton on a glorious summers day, for a gentle walk up scenic paths to the summit of Win Hill. Surprisingly, there were several sections of path on the walk that had not been walked before by a number of the team. A “coffee stop with a view” was taken halfway up the ridge, and featured both shady and sunny options with a pleasant breeze. The feeling of relaxed enjoyment persisted throughout the walk, despite a final steep climb up to the top of Win Hill, where lunch was taken. Sheltered spots were found, as the breeze was a little keener here.
The descent, initially quite steep, upset a few knees, but they had settled down again by the time we had passed Aston and crossed the railway line at Hope station. A grade 5 stone stile at Brough was conquered by all without aid (only grade 2 for people with long legs!). Not many walks in the Peak pass a moored yacht, but this one did, near Townfield Lane – the pond it is moored on is not much bigger than the yacht! A finish across freshly mown fields led back to the cars, where the canine team member was glad to dive into the shade of a parked car to cool off.
Sorry, John, to hear of your foot problem, and we hope it is better soon, and you are back out on the Thursday walks. Thank you to all of you who joined Pat and I – we really enjoyed it. According to Sean’s GPS it was 6.06 miles.

Pat & MartinParticipantGreat to see that standards are being maintained while we are in France. The only worrying thing is that there was no mention of mudness!
