12 other people were daft enough to think they should allow me to lead a walk. First problem for a few – where do you park to ensure the Derwent Arms flying gazebo didn’t try to double park on top of your car? We set off OK, past the now closed garden centre (a few shedding tears) up the ridge towards Longstone edge, then dropping left with the intention of taking a high level path through the woods above Coombes Dale. 2nd problem – path closed. So an extended trog up Coombes dale towards Black Harry Gate, round the settlement pond beyond this and back down to Black Harrys gate for lunch. Back up the hill and we followed various paths towards Calver, well above the road from Hassop, at last taking a small path marked on our recently purchased 1:25k map. 3rd problem – the map tells lies, although Dr Livingstone (Rob) intrepidly breaking trail did find a couple of signposts indicating a long lost path, eventually leading back up the hill (instead of straight on as per map) where we took, somewhat gratefully the well beaten trails back into Calver. About 8 miles, depending on whose tracking device you believe. Thanks for allowing me to get you “lost” in the jungle. Never entirely trust the maps for a group walk without recceing first. I’ll leave others to make more comments.
We have booked in from Thursday night, originally intending to stay until the following Thursday, but will probably shorten that to Monday or Tuesday. I think David & Linda are booked in Thursday to Thursday, Pete and Jane are, again I think, Thursday to Monday.
Don’t worry on our behalf. I really don’t think my left knee makes it worth going to N Wales. If you do move, I may reconsider, but I doubt it.

Thursday 9th January walk
Meet at Monyash. Not sure which way round yet, but the loop includes Flagg, Taddington and Deepdale. About 8 miles, but not a huge amount of ascent & descent.I know it is late notice, but the weather is worse here than forecast. It is due to dry up about 10am.
Is anyone planning to cycle? Please text or whatsapp. Thanks.
I don’t know if anyone went up to Dovestones, but as far as I know, only Hugh and myself turned up at Horseshoe, though we climbed on the lower tier, having borrowed a guidebook to find vaguely suitable routes. Good workout at top of our grades. Definitely need a guidebook (or a new one in Hugh’s case).
I thought I had put out a cancellation about my walk on Sunday. As Elen is going to lead a walk from their house, I will NOT be doing mine, and will save this route for another time.
So please note, Sunday’s walk will be led by Elen, from their house, at 10:30.
I managed to slowly cycle back past Fairholmes, braking on downhill bits to keep the chain in tension, but then the back wheel seized up completely shearing the skewer holding the wheel on, so did then have to walk the rest of the way.

19 plus two dogs set out from a carpark underneath Win Hill in somewhat gloomy, but improving conditions. A gawp at the low level in Ladybower reservoir (how long before the overflows will be in use again?) before crossing the dam and then following the permissive footpath up towards the north end of Bamford Edge. Coffee was taken in the relative shelter of a wall, with impressive westerly views across the reservoir and Win Hill. After following the edge until the drop off point, route finding was abdicated to others to find the quarry on the eastern side of the edge, for lunch. A gentle descent down the road, then doubled back across fields into Bamford, where we crossed the river at the stepping stones. Superb reflections of the cottage and plants by the pooled river in, by now, brilliant sun. If we were still using film instead of digital cameras, Kodak would have made a fortune that day. And so back to the cars. Strangely, no-one fancied extending the walk up the well known muddy path to Win Hill. 6 miles. Thanks everyone – especially the person who arranged the weather.
