Hope that you can make it on Thursday. Tea and cakes at our house afterwards. Please bring cake!
The bluebells were looking spectacular this morning.
The coffee stop will hopefully offer extensive views over the moors, while the planned lunch break over looks a meadow full of cowslips.
David and LindaDavid PendleburyKeymasterIf the weather is as poor as predicted, I suggest Awesome Walls instead. Post a WhatsApp message if you are going and what time. I have a tendinitis injury and will not be there. David
David PendleburyKeymasterThe weather gods looked kindly on us, so that 14 of us had a great walk of twelve a a half miles from Hathersage. The aim of the walk was to visit six of the seven halls reputable built by Robert Eyre for his sons in the sixteenth century. Local knowledge saved the walk leader from going too far astray. The weather improved over the day and we experienced a great sunset from Moorseats Hall. Thanks to all those who came. David

David PendleburyKeymasterReminder that next Sunday’s walk starts from the end of Station Approach in Hathersage at 9.30am.
The route is about 12 miles/19 km taking in Hazelford, Highlow, Offerton, Shatton, North Lees and Moorseats. Contact me if you need a lift or post if you can offer one. DavidDavid PendleburyKeymasterThe next away meet is Pembroke 11-14 August. Beautiful coastal scenery with some excellent beaches. The coast path goes through the area and there are also great walks around the Bosherston lilly ponds.
This area has some of the best climbing in the UK at all grades.
We are staying at Bosherston Campsite which is cheap and fairly basic. Portaloo type toilets (bring your own loo roll) and a cold shower. No booking is required, just pay Simon the farmer £5 for each night you stay. There are plenty of other sites in the area if you need more facilities.
I will put some climbing specific information on the climber’s WhatsApp page.
See you there!
DavidDavid PendleburyKeymasterVanda,
As previously mentioned I can do a quiz, either just a pictorial one or in combination with some questions. I think the pictorial quiz should be long enough for a whole session. It would be on the Peak District National Park.
We aim to be away some of the winter so by Zoom would be preferred.
DavidDavid PendleburyKeymasterIt was a great evening! It was well organised and good to see such wonderful photos. Thank you all for organising, judging, participating and watching. Linda
David PendleburyKeymasterGreetings from the Peloponnese where we are climbing at Leonidio.
Thanks to Paul for opening up the debate.
It is up to the active climbers to sort this out, or decide if there is sufficient t interest to maintain a weekly programme.
I am not sure who goes out or tries to go out on a regular basis.
Todays working environment makes it difficult for some to attend and some of the regular climbers have never come out in the week. Those who do not work or have retired are sometimes away for extended periods of time, perhaps climbing elsewhere. To give Linda and myself as an example,, we will have climbed on about 100 days this year but on only about 20 club meets. Whilst this may have been exeptional due to family commitments, we can be away for big chunks of the Summer.
The poor weather this summer has not helped attendance.
Personally,I think the choice of venues should be reviewed to be both more specific and more wideranging as explained below.
Doctor Johnson said to be tired of Stanage is to be tired of life. However, the Meets List should state Stanage Flying Buttress or Stanage Paradise Wall rather than Stanage Popular End or. Stanage Plantation. Curbar or Gardoms either mean an evening searching for others or climbing in the same area each visit,
Plenty of gritstone crags never get a visit while Carls Walk, Tegness Pinnacle and Higgar Tor are probably due a rest.
There are only ever 3 or 4 limestone crags on the Meets List and one sports crag despite a dozen climbers visiting Kalymnos this Autumn.
The bouldering sessions have been popular and it would be easy to arrange joint bouldering and climbing evening meets.
Communication should be improved, pàrticularly from those seeking climbing partners!! We normally put out a message if we are going.
3vening meets have no start time and we will normally go earlier indicated in our message,
A meet coordinator, perhaps a volunteer for a particular month is definitely worth trying. It would not matter if they could not attend every meet.
Various people have over recent years suggested we have a fixed night like other clubs and on balance I would support this. It makes planning much easier when the Meets List is never to hand.
Communication also needs to enable flexibility so if it is wet on the designated night we can flag an alternative. No wind in midsummer may mean midges and the need to go elsewhere.
I hope tat the Friday wall crew will continue to meet up in the summer, but outside. This could be in addition to evening meets. I do not know how much overlap there is.
Thanks Paul
DavidApril 9, 2015 at 8:40 pm in reply to: Open Climbing weekends (New Members weekends) April 2015 #1106David PendleburyKeymasterFollowing the experience gained from previous years, we have slightly changed the format of the New Members weekend this year. Firstly there are two weekends! This is due to the bad weather experienced last year, giving us more chance to climb outside. Secondly, the session at Awesome Walls, hastily arranged due to the weather, was very successful and a great opportunity for members to talk to those interested in the club. Hopefully we will meet people indoors initially this year.
To make these weekends a success we need members to suport them – both at the indoor and outdoor sessions. Thank you if you have already volunteered – we need more of you! Could you ‘meet and greet’ or belay others if you do not wish to climb yourself?
The two Awesome Walls evenings are from 6pm on Friday 17 and 24 April and the Sunday meets are on the 19 April at Birchen Edge and 26 April at Stanage Popular End, both from 10.30am.
It would be useful if you could let me know if you are able to attend (0114 2219460 or by email) – we need to ensure there are plenty of enthusiastic members at each session! There is further information on the website.
Thanks
DavidDavid PendleburyKeymasterAl,
I posted the Yorkshire Dales meet and it appears in Latest but not Meet Reports. I was having some problems with the photo so started again and forgot to tick the Meet Report box. Is there some way it can be retrospectively linked in?
DavidDavid PendleburyKeymasterAl, thanks for this clarification
