ParticipantPlease note the menu for the Christmas Lunch is now on the message board under the route detail
sent out on the 23rd November. In addition to menu there will be a Turkey dinner at £18 plus a Christmas
pudding at £6.50.
Can you kindly send your menu choice to my phone 07468 697805 by WhatsApp so as not to clog up the
walking WhatsApp group messages. You can also email me direct on pham601051@aol.com
To give the Grouse time to organize our lunches can you ensure you let me have your choice no later than
“close of play” on Tuesday 12th December.
I am not sure whether the “Ginger Frogs” are still at Barbrook Bridge. We will just have to see if they’re there
on the day!
As per our usual custom Christmas attire is mandatory. Also by tradition a carol will be sung prior to our
departure from the Fox House.
Look forward to seeing you all on the 21st December.

ParticipantPlease note we will now meet at Edale’s main car park, next to the station, at 8.30am to ensure
we get car parking spaces.
Our intention is to start by measuring our pacing for 100 metres followed by an indoor session in the Penny Pot cafe covering grid references, route planning etc.
Don’t forget to bring the Dark Peak 1/25,000 map number OL1 plus compass, a pen and your phone.
Look forward to seeing you on the day.

9 of us set out from the Grouse in fair weather which soon turned sunny and warm with little wind.
The main benefit of the good weather was the outstanding views – even Lincoln cathedral could be seen plus some Red Deer some distance away.
Coffee break was taken at the White Edge trig point – lunch break on the top of Curbar Edge. See photos previously posted on the Walking WhatsApp group.
All in all a very pleasant stroll. Many thanks to all who came and for you good company.

7 of us, plus Chester the dog, started off from Taddington School in quite a cold easterly breeze. This
eased gradually as we made our way down to the River Wye via Long Lane. Coffee was taken on some convienant
board walks near the river brige at GR 128735. Various layers then came off as the sun heated us up strolling along the very pleasant river path round Chee Tor.
Lunch was delayed until nearly 1.30pm (Martin wouldn’t have approved!) due to the leaders wish to take advantage
of hot refreshments, cake and seating at the bike shed cafe opposite the entrance to Great Rocks Dale.
A steep climb out of the valley then followed on the Pennine bridleway before we crossed the A6 again taking the track up towards Chelmorton. We turned off left before the village, then climbed further past Fivewells Farm and past the trig point and waterworks on Sour Top. A descent then followed back to the village and cars.
Many thanks to all who came and for your excellent company.
As an aside Chester managed his first full Thursday walk with plenty of energy left at the end plus seemed to leap over every stile. Deffinitely another Thursday walker!

27 of us set out from the Foxhouse proceeding across Totley Moor to the Trig Point before descending to Barbrook
Bridge for a coffee break. See website pic ( courtesy of Andrew ). We then headed up hill passed Lady’s Cross, over the White Edge Ridge passed White Edge Lodge and so down to lunch at the Grouse to celebrate Charles Knowles 90th birthday. Apart from those walking others had either travelled by car or cycled to swell our number.
43 members passed and present, plus Charles’s nieces and friends, sat down for an excellent lunch. We also were treated to a very tasty birthday cake kindly made by Rosy.
Speeches then followed by Vanda, Paul and Charles who in turn was very delighted to see everybody including Hamish who had travelled down from Fife in Scotland. Some of us then returned to the Foxhouse via the Longshaw estate shirting round some logging loading on the main track.
A great occasion, a great turnout and pleasant sunny weather. For those walking to and from the Foxhouse a distance of just over 6 miles.
Many thanks to all for making it a special day for Charles.

16 of us set off from Curbar Gap in drizzly conditions – the dry forecast was wrong again!
Coffee break was taken on some convenient logs at the path crossroads below Froggatt Edge.
2 of our number then departed on the eastward path back for a shorter walk.
We carried on down to Froggatt Bridge and then proceeded along the River Derwent path through Calver.
Albeit wet conditions have prevailed for some time the path to Baslow wasn’t as muddy as expected only scoring 7 out of 10 on Martin’s Mudness scale – dodging large puddles being the main issue.
Approaching Baslow the River Derwent was certainly in spate as noted on the Walkers WhatsApp. page video.
The weather luckily dried up for our lunch stop on the seats behind Baslow church where some took advantage of the stone seating in the rear porch. We were asked to sign the church visitors book by a ‘local’ which most of our number did. The church clock was mentioned as having ‘Victoria’ lettering in lieu of numerals which I hadn’t noticed before – see also WhatsApp pic.
From the church we took the road up through the village and then the path along underneath Baslow Edge
back to the cars. Early lambs were detected in fields below our path – hopefully they’ll survive the colder weather expected next week.
An enjoyable walk with some sunny periods and good views. Good timing got us back to the parking area just as the rain started again.
Thanks to all who came and for your excellent company plus my thanks to Gordon for keeping the party together from the rear. A distance of 7.33 miles by my Strava app.

Participant15/12 Walk Report
What a day! It had it all – winter conditions underfoot, a clear blue sky and stunning views. Plus a little excursion for some!
I’m not going to describe the route in great detail, to those who weren’t walking, just to note the following. 24 of us set out from the Foxhouse including two who had started at the Grouse. We caught up with 2 early starters at the Totley Moor Trig Point plus another large group who were apparently heading off to Owler Bar. Our route then took us down to Barbrook Bridge where we had coffee and Ginger Frog (brandy & ginger wine mix) kindly supplied by Dave C.
Here we discovered a missing member so two search teams of two proceeded back to the Trig Point, where our back-marker had indicated all present as nobody behind. Phone calls from our search teams revealed no trace of our missing member who did eventually turn up at the Grouse ahead of the teams.
Apparently so keen to get to the pub he had presumed we were going in the same direction as the “Owler Bar” group and only realised he was “Billy no mates” at least a half mile in the wrong direction! Having retraced his steps he met up with another Castle member who had set off late from the Foxhouse. They both took a different path to Barbrook Bridge hence missing the search teams.
Oh the joys of Party management!!
Having said goodbye to two members not lunching 32 people sat down for lunch including 7 non Totley route walkers.
Fabulous food was served and general merriment prevailed. Afterwards individual groups returned to the Foxhouse via the Longshaw Estate.
Distance for most 6miles – 506 feet of ascent.
A few thankyou’s:- Thanks to Dick for bringing Charles, thanks to Lin for the Tom Patey song reading, thanks to the two rescue teams, and many thanks to Dave C for the excellent “Ginger Frog” made with a very mature brandy!
Thanks also to Linda Mc. for organising the weather all the way from Spain!
Lastly thanks to each and everyone who turned out. All in all a fantastic day and superb company.

5 of us set out on our route thus:-
Gardoms tops, crossed Chesterfield/Baslow road near the Robin Hood pub, up along the top of Chatsworth Edge where we had our coffee break. Two of our number then departed for a shorter route back to Baslow while the remaining three proceeded to Baslow via the Hunting Tower. Lunch taken near the lodge. Major climb after Baslow to Baslow Edge and back to the cars via Wellington’s memorial.
Autumn colours superb, stags spotted on the Big Moor and no rain despite the poor weather forecast.
Thanks to those who turned out for your company and “catch ups”
Distance approx. 7.25 miles.
