Hi All,
Just a reminder that I need your food orders in for the 20th April by
close of play nest Wednesday 12th April.
Thanks.
PetePeter HammondParticipantPrior to and after Charles’s birthday lunch we will be doing a Thursday walk as usual.
Route details etc:-
Park at the Fox House roadside parking GR:- 267803 for an 11am start. Suggest car share where possible
as the layby is always busy plus I expect a large turnout for Charles’s 90th.
We will go across Totley Moor to the 395M trig point then on to Barbrook Bridge, Lady’s Cross and White Edge before descending to the Grouse.
For those not walking – meet at the Grouse for 1pm.
Return route is via the Longshaw Estate and Lodge.
Total distance 6 miles split 4 miles out and 2 back.
The menu for lunch will be posted here shortly. Please note I will need your orders texted to me on 07468 697805 by “close of play” on the 12th April. Details of the route and menu will also be sent out on the Walking WhatsApp.
Be great to see a good response on this special occasion.

16 of us set off from Curbar Gap in drizzly conditions – the dry forecast was wrong again!
Coffee break was taken on some convenient logs at the path crossroads below Froggatt Edge.
2 of our number then departed on the eastward path back for a shorter walk.
We carried on down to Froggatt Bridge and then proceeded along the River Derwent path through Calver.
Albeit wet conditions have prevailed for some time the path to Baslow wasn’t as muddy as expected only scoring 7 out of 10 on Martin’s Mudness scale – dodging large puddles being the main issue.
Approaching Baslow the River Derwent was certainly in spate as noted on the Walkers WhatsApp. page video.
The weather luckily dried up for our lunch stop on the seats behind Baslow church where some took advantage of the stone seating in the rear porch. We were asked to sign the church visitors book by a ‘local’ which most of our number did. The church clock was mentioned as having ‘Victoria’ lettering in lieu of numerals which I hadn’t noticed before – see also WhatsApp pic.
From the church we took the road up through the village and then the path along underneath Baslow Edge
back to the cars. Early lambs were detected in fields below our path – hopefully they’ll survive the colder weather expected next week.
An enjoyable walk with some sunny periods and good views. Good timing got us back to the parking area just as the rain started again.
Thanks to all who came and for your excellent company plus my thanks to Gordon for keeping the party together from the rear. A distance of 7.33 miles by my Strava app.

What a day! It had it all – winter conditions underfoot, a clear blue sky and stunning views. Plus a little excursion for some!
I’m not going to describe the route in great detail, to those who weren’t walking, just to note the following. 24 of us set out from the Foxhouse including two who had started at the Grouse. We caught up with 2 early starters at the Totley Moor Trig Point plus another large group who were apparently heading off to Owler Bar. Our route then took us down to Barbrook Bridge where we had coffee and Ginger Frog (brandy & ginger wine mix) kindly supplied by Dave C.
Here we discovered a missing member so two search teams of two proceeded back to the Trig Point, where our back-marker had indicated all present as nobody behind. Phone calls from our search teams revealed no trace of our missing member who did eventually turn up at the Grouse ahead of the teams.
Apparently so keen to get to the pub he had presumed we were going in the same direction as the “Owler Bar” group and only realised he was “Billy no mates” at least a half mile in the wrong direction! Having retraced his steps he met up with another Castle member who had set off late from the Foxhouse. They both took a different path to Barbrook Bridge hence missing the search teams.
Oh the joys of Party management!!
Having said goodbye to two members not lunching 32 people sat down for lunch including 7 non Totley route walkers.
Fabulous food was served and general merriment prevailed. Afterwards individual groups returned to the Foxhouse via the Longshaw Estate.
Distance for most 6miles – 506 feet of ascent.
A few thankyou’s:- Thanks to Dick for bringing Charles, thanks to Lin for the Tom Patey song reading, thanks to the two rescue teams, and many thanks to Dave C for the excellent “Ginger Frog” made with a very mature brandy!
Thanks also to Linda Mc. for organising the weather all the way from Spain!
Lastly thanks to each and everyone who turned out. All in all a fantastic day and superb company.

PetePeter HammondParticipantHi All,
The Grouse menu is now up on the Message Board under my 1st November message. It is a little blurred but if you click on it and enlarge it you should be able to read the content. As mentioned previously there is also the option of a full Christmas dinner at £15 and Christmas Pudding at £6.
Many thanks to Andy for posting the menu.
Await your orders!

5 of us set out on our route thus:-
Gardoms tops, crossed Chesterfield/Baslow road near the Robin Hood pub, up along the top of Chatsworth Edge where we had our coffee break. Two of our number then departed for a shorter route back to Baslow while the remaining three proceeded to Baslow via the Hunting Tower. Lunch taken near the lodge. Major climb after Baslow to Baslow Edge and back to the cars via Wellington’s memorial.
Autumn colours superb, stags spotted on the Big Moor and no rain despite the poor weather forecast.
Thanks to those who turned out for your company and “catch ups”
Distance approx. 7.25 miles.

10 of us left our house under an overcast sky with a forecast of rain for early afternoon.
We soon passed the village sheep-wash, in Hill Houses Lane, built in 1860 and used by local farmers until the 1920’s.
After skirting the side of Stubbing Pond (actually a lake) we climbed passed two farms mainly adjacent arable land and cow fields before reaching the Matlock road. Our coffee break was then taken amongst rocks from an old quarry in Plantation Woods. Here two of our number departed for a shorter walk back.
After the delightful woods we crossed Stone Edge golf course and then descended to Holymoorside and lake.
Here we lunched by the lakes’ edge watching swallows and two Canada Geese with their seven goslings. (Pics already on the WhatsApp Group forum)
The return journey started with a steep climb up to Bage Hill Farm, through more pleasant fields, then passed Walton Lodge Farm to once again cross the busy Matlock road. It was then another short climb through a buttercup laden field to reach Harper Hill. From here we descended through woods, passed Stubbing Pond again,
and Pearce Lane Farm before a short climb up to the Barley Mow pub and back to no 15.
Our tea party then commenced and luckily escaped the rain until we started packing up.
Many thanks to all for your company and for sharing all those yummy cakes etc.
Walk distance 7.9 miles by Andy’s GPS with 1088ft of ascent.Peter HammondParticipant3rd March Walk Report
10 of us and one dog gathered at the roadside parking at Barber Booth with two members electing to start the
climb up Jacobs Ladder 15 minutes ahead of the main group.
Very overcast conditions prevailed and some were soon donning waterproofs albeit the rain soon eased off.
We stopped for coffee at a convenient wall, which we used to sit on, just beyond the top of the ladder. Unfortunately the views were non existent due to low cloud which persisted for most of the walk.
On arriving at Edale Rocks we re-joined our “early birds” who by then had also taken coffee. Onwards and upwards to Kinder Low, our high point of the day, before descending slightly to pick up the main path to Edale Head? where we stopped for lunch. The next section was spent trying to avoid the soggy peat before we crossed the ford over Crowden Brook and then on to Grindslow Knoll. Here we proceeded on a compass bearing virtually due south. We really didn’t need this as the path we then followed, not shown on my map!, took us in the correct direction crossing a wall very near to a plane-crash site Gordon had taken us to on the first of his “Plane Crash” walks. We took a short diversion to the site where Gordon explained the reason for the crash.
From here we descended very steeply for some considerable distance before joining the Pennine Way to Upper Booth.
A road stroll then retraced our steps back to the cars.
Many thanks to all for your company and participating in a reasonable “mountain day”Peter HammondParticipantI bow to superior knowledge Andy. I forgot we had so many on the Little John lunch walk in 2019. I believe we may have had 27 either walking or in total when we last went to the Grouse in 2018 but no doubt your logbook will give the exact number?
PetePeter HammondParticipantHi All again,
There are a number of members doing the walk next Thursday but not lunching in the Grouse. If you would like to join us just for the walk you would be very welcome to do so. Everybody is meeting at 11am at the (currently free) car park at Curbar Gap.
Look forward to seeing you all in Festive attire!
PetePeter HammondParticipantHi All,
As per the Heath Secretary’s advise for going to parties can I please request those joining us for lunch during this walk
take a lateral flow test before leaving for the walk. Test kits are available free from a chemist.
Many thanks in anticipation of your cooperation.
PetePeter HammondParticipantJust a reminder about ordering your meal for this walk. So far I have 13 members who have ordered lunch.
As I asked the Grouse to reserve 25 places for us it would be good to know if anybody else is joining us. If not
I obviously need to let the Grouse know so they can take other bookings. If you do intend to lunch at the Grouse can you let me have your order soonest – text details to me on 07468 697805.
Thanks. PetePeter HammondParticipantAs per WhatsApp message – Charles would like to join us for lunch but as he doesn’t have any transport
now, he is looking for a lift. If anybody else is just joining us for lunch and can give Charles a lift can you
please text me on 07468 697805.
Many thanks.
PetePeter HammondParticipantFor the link to the menu go to the 9th December on the Thursday Walks page.
Await your choices!
