As many will know, the club’s oldest (and honorary) member, and former President (1983), Charles Knowles, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Thursday 20 April this year. Many will remember the celebration of his 70th at a memorable Easter meet at the Glenbrittle campsite on the Isle of Skye, and his 80th at the Psalter Lane Hotel. Though he has not been able to participate in the club’s walking and climbing activities during the past few years, he was a mainstay of meets and activities in the UK, the Alps, Morocco and the Greater Ranges for many decades, and still attends the club’s social events regularly.

He has said that he would prefer a daytime rather than an evening event, and so to celebrate his birthday, a lunchtime booking has been made for the back room at the Grouse Inn at Froggatt on Thursday 20 April. This can be fitted into a regular Thursday walk, with non-walkers joining in at the pub.

Exact details (and booking arrangements for lunch) will be dealt with nearer the time – this posting is intended to be a “save the date” message, and will allow those who live away from Sheffield, or who normally work on a Thursday, and would like to attend, to make the necessary arrangements. Please pass this information on to any former members you are in touch with who know Charles and who might be interested in coming.

Prior to and after Charles’s birthday lunch we will be doing a Thursday walk as usual.
    Route details etc:-
Park at the Fox House roadside parking GR:- 267803 for an 11am start. Suggest car share where possible
as the layby is always busy plus I expect a large turnout for Charles’s 90th.
We will go across Totley Moor to the 395M trig point then on to Barbrook Bridge, Lady’s Cross and White Edge before descending to the Grouse.
For those not walking – meet at the Grouse for 1pm.
Return route is via the Longshaw Estate and Lodge.
Total distance 6 miles split 4 miles out and 2 back.
The menu for lunch will be posted here shortly. Please note I will need your orders texted to me on 07468 697805 by “close of play” on the 12th April. Details of the route and menu will also be sent out on the Walking WhatsApp.
Be great to see a good response on this special occasion.

    Walk Report
27 of us set out from the Foxhouse proceeding across Totley Moor to the Trig Point before descending to Barbrook
Bridge for a coffee break. See website pic ( courtesy of Andrew ). We then headed up hill passed Lady’s Cross, over the White Edge Ridge passed White Edge Lodge and so down to lunch at the Grouse to celebrate Charles Knowles 90th birthday. Apart from those walking others had either travelled by car or cycled to swell our number.
43 members passed and present, plus Charles’s nieces and friends, sat down for an excellent lunch. We also were treated to a very tasty birthday cake kindly made by Rosy.
Speeches then followed by Vanda, Paul and Charles who in turn was very delighted to see everybody including Hamish who had travelled down from Fife in Scotland. Some of us then returned to the Foxhouse via the Longshaw estate shirting round some logging loading on the main track.
A great occasion, a great turnout and pleasant sunny weather. For those walking to and from the Foxhouse a distance of just over 6 miles.
Many thanks to all for making it a special day for Charles.
