A beautiful sunny day welcomed the 8 Thursday walkers from Hartington, where we explored either side of Dovedale. A varied and gradual ascent led us across meadows, pastoral fields and woodland pockets. We admired the patterns of the hay mown fields in the valley and reflected on the use of colours and stripes in impressionist paintings – obviously a cultured group this Thursday!! A short walk down a quiet lane gave access to Sheen Hill and our first break. The trig point duly climbed, we descended and walked further down the valley to Pilsbury Castle motte and bailey for lunch- an early Norman settlement. Two of the group broke away here to bag some local Ethels (apparently there is a log book that goes with them!) However the rest of the group meandered on the opposite valley side to the morning, crossing various fields and open meadows before a short descent into Hartington centre, where various ice creams proved too tempting not to buy. Billed at 6.5 miles, more like 7 completed. Thank you all for interesting chat and reflections.
