A thirty miler starting from Castleton up the old Mam Tor road (some portering required). Then to Sparrowpit and massive downs to Chapel Milton. There is an option to do a tour of Eccles Pike (lovely views) before cycling over the flatest available route to Dove Holes. The last section takes quiet, scenic roads back to Castleton through the armpit of the Peak.
A Smashing ride.
Some hills involved but the majority of the chevrons are in our favour.
10 for 10.15 departure.
Meet and roadside parking just outside of Castleton, where the road forks to go up Winnats Pass. Park on roadside on right hand fork (i.e NOt the WInnats Pass road) GR 144 829It was ok. Came in at under 30 and there were complaints from the crew who felt cheated of half a mile.
Castleton, Sparrow Pit, Wash , Chapel Milton, Eccles Pike, Chapel, Dove Holes, Smalldale and back
Stonking downs, sublime views and a new cafe.
Glad to say all the other elements of a castle bike ride were there too: inappropriate comments, a tea shop, a lost person, and first-up-every-hill-Andrew wanting to take short cuts home.
