FrankFrank MellorParticipantThursday 28 April Walk report..
13 people set off from Carr Lane car park on this fine but rather cool and grey morning. The initial approach, new to some,, led up through woods to join the path from Thornhill and the open slopes of Win Hill. The first cuckoo of the season was heard and a welcome break was taken before the final ascent to the trig point.
The route now led along Hope Brink to a sheltered lunch spot and eventually turned sharp left to descend the rough bridleway to Fulwood Stile Farm. From there we walked field paths and lanes to return to the starting point.. Various GPS devices indicated we had covered almost 8 miles rather than the advertised 6.75. This discrepancy arose because we took a gentler descent to the beginning of the bridleway rather than a more direct route down steep grass.
A very pleasant walk with excellent company!
Thanks,
Frank & JenniferFrank MellorParticipantNB the start time for this walk is, as usual, 11 am (NOT 10 am as advertised in the posting)
Apologies for any confusion

Frank MellorParticipantTo clarify my position :
I think zoom will prove a boon in these days of no physical contact, and I look forward to joining future meetings and seeing “slide shows” etc.
I strongly feel that the pictures submitted for the Photo Comp should not be exhibited before that event as it would remove any sense of anticipation or surprise and detract from the enjoyment of the evening.
Entrants have submitted their photos on the understanding that they will be judged in the competition, not that they will be used in a zoom preview session.
Thank you,
FrankFrank MellorParticipantThinking about Zoom and the Photo Comp my preference is to postpone the latter until the virus has burnt out, especially as Ian Smith has indicated he would prefer to delay his judgment until then. We could then look forward to hearing Ian’s comments at a pleasant evening in the clubroom. What are member’s views about this?
FrankFrank MellorParticipant18 people and a dog gathered at Curbar Gap on a bright and very breezy morning. We headed south to Wellington Monument then turned left along the track where highland cattle had made a welcome reappearance. An early coffee break was taken where a grassy depression by the wall accommodated most of the team. The predictably boggy approach to Birchen Edge was followed by descent to Robin Hood. 200yds down the road a stile gave access to a pleasant grassy path up to Moorside Rocks, which gave scant shelter from the wind but had a sunny aspect, and was deemed suitable for a lunch stop.
Next came an enjoyable descent through birch woodland and a perilous crossing of the main road at Cupola Cottage. Thence a sustained boggy trudge back up to the end of Baslow Edge. The excellent path under the Edge was followed down until another, much wetter, path lead us back to Curbar Gap.
Approx 6 miles
Thank you all for your company and to Pete for devising the route
Frank & JenniferFrank MellorParticipantHello Pete,
Sorry to hear your news. Jennifer and I will take on the walk on Thursday
FrankFrank MellorParticipantApproaching Crook Hills
Forget itFrank MellorParticipantApproaching Crook Hills
Frank MellorParticipant16 set off and were soon joined by 1 other and a different dog. We did 3 ups and 3 downs, missed the path twice, sat down twice (once for twelvses and once for a slightly late lunch), squelched through one muddy section, visited one trig point, got drizzled on a few times and lost nobody at all.
GPS showed 6.9 miles which left one of the leaders feeling smug as just less than 7 miles had been predicted. Think that about covers it. Quite a success I thought.
Thanks everybody,
