Apologies for delay, computer log in problem plus football to blame!
Despite my breaking the distance from Sheffield rules for my first Thursday walk lead, 12 of us assembled in Marple for a walk starting out along the Peak Forest canal.
Not far into the walk, disaster appeared to be the order of the day as the canal side path was fenced off and closed for repairs. However a temporary and mercifully short diversion took us past the closed section and we were able to rejoin our route. Despite this, the first picnic spot was spurned as being too near the start so we soon made our way down to the aquaduct, the highest stone spanned aquaduct in the country. After many photographs, we carried on towards Romily before leaving the canal side and walking through the woods to the 16century Chadkirk chapel at which point coffee [and in one case at least, lunch] was taken.
Returning to the aquaduct, we descended to pass under both the magnificent aquaduct and railway stone arches. I’d been told mud was an essential part of Thursday walks, so the next section, uphill through a horse field was perfect, sticky and deep. After a laneside boot clean we descended again to river level where lunch was taken before passing through woods and lanes to eventually enter Brabyns Park, originally the site of Brabyns Hall, now demolished leaving a wonderful open parkland and remains of a 18century walled garden. After the final uphill stretch through the park and the Memorial Park we arrived back at the cars after 7.5 miles just before it started to rain.
Thanks to all who attended, hopefully an enjoyable day in an area rarely if ever visited by the CMC.
    Cheers
