Despite the absence of a note from his mother, the official walk leader pleaded infirmity, so nineteen (no, 18 plus Poppy) pushed up through bracken and heather to start the walk above Padley Gorge. A short stop to admire Surprise View before starting up onto and along Millstone Edge where some branched off and disappeared into the bracken! Down through Whim Wood to a coffee stop – a little late but with great views + sun. Down to Hathersage where John left us for a well-earned rest. Lunch was taken along the river under oak trees where a nuthatch flitted amongst the branches and sheep munched their way towards us. Continuing along the river to Grindleford Bridge we climbed up through Hay Wood and back up above Padley Gorge to the cars and the ice-cream van. Lots of lovely autumn colours and good company. 8.1 miles in all!
