Just 2 members joined the meet leader for a damp 7 mile walk from Dale Dyke up to Moscar and back. The reservoir was full, and the overflow sluices running fast, but we never got the lashing rain and winds that the forecast suggested – in fact we had several dry spells. Our route took us below the dam, and half way along the SE side of the reservoir to the steep ascent To Wet Shaw Lane. We followed the Stake Hill Road through the land being purchased by the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, pausing to inspect the meet leader’s work from 2 days previous.
After passing the summit point we joined Moscar Cross Road for a short distance before taking the footpath down to Sugworth Hall and a lunch stop in the shelter of the rhodo path. On past Boot’s Tower the old ochre bog is much easier now that block stepping stones have been installed. Down in the valley bottom the meet leader took the wrong bridge at first, resulting in a short there-and-back detour, but we were soon on the reservoir-edge path back to the cars. Thanks to the younger and faster members who waited for the creaky old meet leader to catch up. Not a bad day considering what we had expected.
