An unusually large group for a Thursday walk assembled at
Longshaw Woodcroft car park. There were 24 of us and two
dogs. We set off under cloudy skies, southwest past
Longshaw Lodge, skirting the pond, crossing the road and
dropping to the footbridge over Burbage Brook. It was Leap
Day, although we did not see a great deal of leaping. From
the footbridge, the sunken lane brought us to the Surprise
car park. From here our route climbed over roots and rocks,
eventually reaching Mother Cap. We took our coffee break
here, enjoying good views and good conversation. After the
break the path led past Over Owler Tor, across Winyard’s
Nick and up to Higger Tor, the high point of the walk. We
now headed for Upper Burbage Bridge, pausing on the way for
our lunch on a delightful perch overlooking the Burbage
Valley. After crossing the bridge (or the brook below it we
regrouped at the top of the Green Drive. One couple opted
to walk back at a higher level above Burbage Edge. The rest
of us strolled down the Drive, eventually crossing the road
into Longshaw, then southeast to the B-road and the Lodge
on the other side. This was the parting of the ways, as
some returned to the car park while the rest of us
continued to the café for very welcome tea and cakes.
Distance just under six miles. Thanks to everyone who came.
