Starting from Mytham Bridge, Bamford, a large party headed up beside the golf course, not daring to take the short cut across it as it was very busy, to the right turn onto Hurst Clough Lane. Ignoring the “road closed” signs the leader confidently explained that the resurfacing was surely finished as there was only a small section left to do a month ago. Near the top we encountered a team with a tar machine that was as wide as the lane and had to return a bit to follow the footpath beside the lane, which luckily had a (slightly illegal) exit just above the machine.
Next stop was on joining Coggers Lane, for coffee and birthday cake, brought by Marian on her bike, out for a ride with Mary to celebrate her 60th – candles were lit, despite the breeze and all (not the dog) sang happy birthday. This was all a complete surprise to Mary.
Retraced steps to Gatehouse to join the footpath through the woods to gain the path up to Bamford Edge, then down through the wonderfully mossy oak wood to Heatherdean, below Ladybower dam and back along the old railway to the start.
Thanks very much to all who came and particularly to Marian for her lovely cake.
