7 members met at Rowsley on,for once, a dry and sunny spring morning.
Crossing the A6 we walked up the lane past a row of enclosures with young calves by the adjacent barn.
A steady climb then led up through Rowsley Moor wood. The usual mid morning coffee break was taken on level ground with a convenient fallen tree providing a seat.
After coffee we emerged from the wood above Calton Houses and were soon negotiating the large pool of water and mud at the edge of Calton plantations, before crossing New Piece wood and traversing the Chatsworth estate eastwards looking down on a large herd of deer.Crossing the road we continued descending to the river where we stopped for lunch ,making use of another convenient fallen tree.
Leaving the Chatsworth estate we continued through the parkland to Beeley passing an obvious “No Smoking” sign on the footpath ! and a strong smell of gas..A fenced off area encircled a bubbling pool of water which marked the source of the gas leak.
After Beeley we climbed to Smeltingmill wood with lovely views back to the village and the Derbyshire countryside.Entering the wood the leader kept to the higher alternative at the path junction, planning to repeat the route he had taken on an earlier “recce” (but walking in the opposite direction). At the next path junction he continued to climb higher eventually reaching the fenced off edge of the disused Burntwood quarry with no onward route.A descent down a steep and rough woody hillside was then taken to join the path the leader had missed.
The remainder of the walk passed without incident and all members duly arrived back at the start.
A lovely walk in some very welcome spring weather.
Thank you to all who came and for your company and tolerance of the mix up in the wood.-I will buy you those beers!

We came across the bubbling gas pool on our Thursday walk on 1st February. It is perhaps surprising that the leak has not been closed yet. There must be a lot of gas being wasted. Andy
