10 of us gathered at Curbar Gap, including the ‘birthday man’ himself, Pete Hammond, sporting an impressive array of 70th birthday badges. After a short walk down the road, a delightfully pretty path through the woods below Curbar Edge, brought us eventually down to Froggatt Bridge, and we then walked along Spooner Lane, following the Derwent Valley Heritage Way to Grindleford. Then a steep climb up through Hay Wood [where 2 peeled off in order to watch an important football match on TV] to the planned drinks stop at the Grouse Inn, where we were briefly joined by 2 other Castle members. Lunch was taken just below White Edge accompanied by flurries of rain, requiring the donning of waterproofs and the opening of 2 large umbrellas, but the sun soon returned as we walked back along White Edge to Curbar Gap. Some of us then drove to Pete and Jane’s house in Wingerworth to continue marking his birthday with a huge chocolate cake and tea.
