Nine of us gathered in Millthorpe ‘car-park’ layby as another large group of walkers strode cheerily by – they were the only other people we saw all day, although we did see quite a lot of horses. Poppy [and owners] were absent today; perhaps they’d seen the weather forecast and didn’t fancy deep mud? So with hoods up and rucksack covers on, and John M. sensibly wearing his wellies, off we set on the planned route, looping anti-clockwise around Millthorpe, along many now-familiar paths. Meekfield Wood provided convenient logs and some shelter for the obligatory coffee stop, and later we had lunch out of the wind behind a thick band of trees, The drizzle did clear eventually, allowing some good views in this less well-known area – definitely worth revisiting in the summer. John peeled off at Rumbling Street as he wanted a shorter walk, leaving the rest of us to head towards the long track leading gently uphill towards Cartledge, and then back to our cars. There was only one [very minor] deviation from the planned route, and, satisfyingly, at least two new sections of footpaths I’d not walked before. The three GPS’s all agreed that we had done just over 7 miles. Thank you all for your good company on not the brightest of days.
