Ten of us gathered in Monyash and, watched by several alpacas, headed north out of the village into open countryside, and up and over the first of numerous stiles, which seemed to be one of the themes of the day [we should have counted them, and might have broken the previous record of 37 ?]. The coffee break was taken on Wheal Lane in sunshine [thank you Linda and David for bringing it back with you from Spain] and we then descended out of the slightly chilly headwind towards Taddington. After skirting the north side of the village along the delightful Hades Lane, with its mossy stone walls and numerous snowdrops, a short climb out of the village brought us to a suitable place for our lunch stop. Suitably refreshed, we then ascended Slipperlow Lane to the trickiest navigation of today’s walk, with an unhelpful dilapidated signpost with its 2 direction pointers missing and no obvious walkers trail through the grass. But heading vaguely southwest [and someone using the map on their mobile phone] a stile was found in the remains of the collapsed wall [always so reassuring!] and then much easier navigation to join Whitefield Lane, to be greeted by a cat with a disconcertingly shortened tail. Then confidently onward to Flagg, where this meet leader had some problems keeping everyone on her chosen paths, before briefly joining the Limestone Way, and then Cross Lane and a last flurry of yet more stiles to take us back to our cars. Eight of us decided to stay and sample the cakes in the nearby cafe, joined by Dick after his cycle ride.
Thank you for your great company and interesting and helpful conversations.
The measured distance [string and 2 GPSs] was somewhere between 7 and 1/2 and 8 miles.
