The forecast was not promising for a walk exposed to the weather over Derwent Moor and Derwent Edge, but five of us and one dog turned up anyway. We opted for the alternative walk past the Ladybower Inn then to Heatherdene heading south through the wood in a cold wind and steady drizzle. After a stop before leaving the shelter of the wood, we walked up to the north end of Bamford Edge through the delightful oak wood admiring the twisted trunks and branches now visible as the leaf canopy is gone. We then passed the sighting tower and with increasing wind and rain we crossed the exposed moorland before descending back to Cutthroat Bridge. A surprisingly enjoyable 5 miles with good company and full waterproofs but in less bad weather than anticipated. Many thanks to those who were prepared to join in (including the dog).

There’s an interesting video about the sighting towers and the 4-mile water tunnel from Ladybower to Rivelin which needed them for its construction.
