Report of Thursday Walk on 25th February from Millthorpe.
Another walk from Millthorpe – a day of sunshine, stunning views, a path that was more like a stream, excitable horses [especially around Lydgate] friendly dogs, unusual stiles [one made creatively from a pallet] and rather a lot of mud. There were 13 on this, as usual, non-recce’d walk, so there were a couple of ‘variations’/deviations from the planned route: the first was when the meet leader was mistakenly holding the map upside-down, and for the second, we were ‘rescued’ by a friendly farmer who kindly pointed out the next 2 stiles for us. A coffee stop was taken in sunshine just before Barlow Grange, and after an un-missable huge footpath sign in Moorhall, we stopped for lunch in Meekfield Wood on some convenient and large logs. I’m not sure what Frank had put in Jenny’s sandwiches, but after eating them, the log on which she was sitting suddenly collapsed, and similarly, it was noted that Jane and Caroline, perched high up on another branch, as they ate their lunches, gradually descended closer and closer to the ground.
The rest of the walk was completed uneventfully, through Unthank, Horsleygate, Lydgate [great views towards Totley] and Holmesfield Common, before a final gentle descent back to Millthorpe, passing a convenient stream on the way for a communal boot-washing session. The 2 GPS’s both agreed that we had done 7 and 1/2 miles.
