    “Mud, mud glorious mud “!
12 castle members and no dogs (they obviously had more sense) set off from Hartington village on a short, five and a half mile jaunt down Wolfscote Dale where it became clear that the soggy conditions were going to cause problems. Just over the second footbridge there was no way to escape the mud but further along we managed to find some stones to have a coffee break. All went well until we came to the junction with Biggin Dale where the footpath was submerged under running water. Two intrepid members carried on regardless while the rest of the group dodged the worst of the wet but instead had to negotiate an awkward fence to reunite the group.
Lunch was consumed while contemplating the amount of mud on our boots, gaiters and trousers. The walk finally ended on a dry path which led back to Hartington and the farmshop cafe where, unusually, all the walkers assembled to recover over tea, coffee and various cakes.
So, thank you to everyone who came and made light of the conditions and were patient while the leader tried to get grips with Locus Maps. More tuition is obviously required!
I have posted some photos on WhatsApp.
