After a week of sunny, frosty weather it was only to be expected that the day was dull and overcast with a hint of rain in the air. This did not deter 10 members, and we left Ashford for the gradual ascent over snowy fields to Sheldon. At the top of the village we took a field path through a wintry landscape to the head of Deep Dale, whose normally muddy path was sufficiently frozen to make the going relatively easy.
After lunch at the car park we crossed the A6 road into Monsal Dale. At the viaduct a short climb brought us on to the Monsal Trail and we continued our ascent up to Monsal Head at which point a steady drizzle began to fall. We continued through fields to regain the Trail for a short distance, then a footpath south led us to Longstone Lane and back to our starting point.
Needless to say, the refreshments in the Aisseford Tea Room were enjoyed by all.
