This was originally envisaged as a Bleaklow walk. However
since Sean has started his Peak District Boundary Walk
Challenge (see details on the Club website), we have decided
to rejig it to walk part of the Boundary Walk instead.
The Stage of the Boundary Walk nearest to where the climbers
are climbing (Laddow) and some may be camping the night
before (Crowden) is Stage 4. This is described in the book
as Old Glossop to Greenfield although the finish is actually
at Dove Stone Reservoir rather than Greenfield village.
Because of the logistical difficulty of walking the whole
stage one way and getting back to the starting point, we
have decided to do half the stage starting from Old Glossop,
returning partially although not entirely via the outward route.Meet 10.00 am at the car park opposite the Wheatsheaf pub in
the centre of Old Glossop, not far from the church and the
Bulls Head pub, grid reference SK 042 949. This should suit
members camping at Crowden on Saturday night who don’t fancy
climbing, as well as those driving out from Sheffield or
elsewhere. Note that the car park does not belong to the
pub; it is a council car park available for visitors. We will follow the route of Stage 4 of the Boundary Walk,
through Tintwistle, past the Swineshaw Resevoirs and up to
the highest point on the stage at Swineshaw Moor (375m)
where we will leave the Boundary Walk to go to the top of
Harridge Pike (395m) from where, weather permitting, we
should be able to have our picnic lunch while enjoying views
to the west over Greater Manchester. If anyone wishes to
continue from here to Dove Stone Reservoir and make their
own transport arrangements from there, that will be fine.
Likewise, if anyone wishes to do the other half of Stage 4,
from Dove Stone Reservoir southward to meet us on Harridge
Pike, that would be another option. We will return via Hydegreen and Brushes to rejoin our
outward route at the Swineshaw Resevoirs. Distance 12.5
miles, 2560 ft of ascent.Andy & Rosy
