    Thursday walk 9-4-26 Meet report

After 20 minutes grappling with the tecnicalities of the parking meter, 13 of us set off from Stanage Plantation car park. Through the planation and on to Stanedge Pole, where we searched for ancient graffiti and noted the six prototype grouse drinking troughs carved in 1907 for snuffy Wilson. Down to Redmires and a sneaky direct route to Oaking Clough Plantation, a lovely lunch stop. Up to the Waterloo coal pit by High Neb, which would be interesting to explore with a rope and a multiple human belay. NW along the edge to Crow Chin, noting the Mesolithic burial mounds and flint knapping factory, and more grouse drinking troughs. Those with 4 hours parking returned to the car park. The rest discovered the elusive Moscar boundary stone, with carvings which might be highlighted in the low evening light. Further wanderings found the Old Woman’s stone; another boundary marker. This was once 6ft high but was blown up about 1924 by Wilson, after a visit by the legendary Ward, probably to discourage further visits. An enthusiastic sub-group found the nearby stone circle, while impending dampness hurried the rest of us back to the car park.
Thanks for everybody’s company and tolerating the historical interludes.
