A small but perfectly formed group [just the 4 of us] gathered in the free parking space in Millthorpe [beware future parking there – the deeply eroded edge is just waiting to scrape unwary drivers’ car bottoms!] before heading uphill towards Cartledge. The last time I led this walk was in February 2025, so everything looked very different with all the lush summer vegetation today, with many stiles [some quite unusual] and signposts hiding themselves. But despite this, there was only one early deviation on the planned route, and we soon found ourselves at the ‘teletubby’ mounds near Dronfield for our coffee stop. Then we headed south on remembered paths through Cowley towards Common Side, for lunch sitting on grass in the sunshine [I’m still wondering what happened to those very convenient 5 benches, which were last seen and enjoyed by us in 2020]. A farmer and his field of barley had altered the expected path to what was shown on the map, but another walker, half hidden by high vegetation, conveniently showed us the correct path to take us to Bole Hill. Then easy road walking [hello horse riders] before taking the familiar path through Rumbling Street and down the sunken lane back to Millthorpe. Thank you Mike, Andrew and Gordon for you excellent company, and between the four of us, managing to remember various flower names and eventually, Gareth Malone’s first name [who needs Google on a Thursday walk!]
