Fifteen humans and Tig gathered in Little Longstone for a 7 and a bit mile wander in weather that wasn’t winter but wasn’t quite spring either. We made the ascent to Longstone Edge via Dale Farm, Moor Lane and Black Plantation and paused at the top for a look back south over the fields and dales. Heading north over the top the plateau of Foolow came into view, but the north-west wind was cool and rather than take a coffee break with the view we headed down to find a sheltered spot in a rake.
Our onward route north included a few stiles, one rather rickety, before a left turn took us across to Wardlow, where the nettles were a lot lower than last time we did the walk. Past the village we took the old lane to the top of Cressbrookdale then south along the top to the entrance to Warlow Hay Cop reserve. This section is normally rich in flowers, and we did see wood anemone, cowslips and a few early purple orchids but the display was less striking than usual. Violas joined the cowslips on the ascent to the trig point, where we stopped on the lee side for lunch just as a light shower rolled in.
Our final section was a descent to Hay Dale then the concessionary path up to Castlegate Lane and up to cross the wall and join the wide pleasant track under the old Crossdale Head workings. A recce had shown some over-friendly heifers on the intended route back to Chertpit Lane so we turned left and took the track back to Dale Farm, passing a hairy bull with an itchy head in the adjeacent field. From the farm we retraced our outward path back to the cars. Sadly the pub and tearoom were closed so we headed home. A nice day out, thanks to all who came along.
