Four set off from Finkle Street car park, north Sheffield, crossing the Trans Pennine Trail to Wortley Top Forge. After a quick play on a high rope swing, who should we meet but another castle member wandering towards us! The plus one made five! Passing some fishing ponds, we followed a pleasant path along the Upper Don before turning sharply uphill to join the TPP. Through the old railway tunnel, I had to be pulled back for missing the turn off! Down to the river again and under a magnificent viaduct – yet more feats of Victorian engineering. Stepping stones, a short burst of uphill and a broad track brought us to some overgrown fields. After some map pondering and GPS tracking (a slight detour from planned route to avoid a stretch of road) we thrashed through undergrowth to climb a stile. Rolling hill views provided a suitable stop for lunch. Onward to the edge of Hunshelf Bank, overlooking Stocksbridge and some of the Peak District edges beyond. An interesting up and down route along the edge included a trig point, the Isle of Skye Panoramic View Point and Green Moor cricket pitch (possibly one of the highest in England) . Through an old quarry, The Delf, (now a wildlife sanctuary) and a few more fields led us to a beautiful woodland descent. After a final stepping stones crossing of the river and photo posing we climbed the last short field back to the TPP and the car park. A good 7.5 mile walk in an area of outlying Sheffield, well worth the exploration. Thank you for lovely company as always.
