Six members met at Great Hucklow under a cloudless blue sky
and sunshine. “Better than yesterday”, someone remarked. It
was chilly but there was little wind and so no wind-chill.
Perfect winter conditions, in fact, which continued
throughout the walk. We headed up the lane past the school,
carefully avoided the icy patches. On reaching the
reservoir at the top, we discovered that we were above the
snow line. The gliding club at Camphill was in view and we
watched as gliders took off and landed. The route lay
downhill, across the stream and up the other side, through
several gates and stiles, to meet the road near Abney
Grange. A traverse of Abney Moor followed, giving us
excellent views, especially towards Win Hill and the
Ashopton Viaduct which was catching the sunlight. Coffee
break was taken at the seats where we reached Brough Lane.
Then we crossed a couple of fields to Robin Hood’s Cross
and headed north along the ridge. Several paragliders were
swooping about. The usual mud on the bridleway down to
Bradwell was frozen, but care was needed negotiating icy
sections. From Bradwell Hills we crossed over to Hazlebadge
Hall, pausing for lunch on the way. From here the route was
past Quarters Farm back to Great Hucklow. The distance was
5.7 miles and the ascent about 1000 feet. Andy and Rosy.
