A glorious sunny day for a scenic walk from Little Longstone. 10 of us ascended to Longstone Edge then dropped down northwards to a grassy bank for a coffee stop with a great view north. A left turn a few fields later took us to Wardlow village, after the gallant rescue of a lamb from a fenced enclosure by Mr Hammond. The track to the edge above Cressbrookdale led to a lunch spot on a sheltered bank with a fine view down the valley.
Continuing southward along the edge the wood anemones were looking pretty, but the cowslips were very small, possibly due to the lack of rain in March. Turning into the nature reserve and heading up Wardlow Hay Cop violets and violas wee in flower, and we enjoyed the 360 degree panorama from the trig point. The resident herd of belted Galloways were near the exit gate getting shade from a hawthorn tree, and we passed by into the meadow and down to the road.
Going up Hay Dale we came across one lonely and very early orchid among the old mining hillocks. Up we went then down the grassy track to Chertpit Lane, pausing to spot newts in the rebuilt dewpond. The gorse was in full bloom and aroma, giving a colourful foreground to the view south, After a short walk west along the lane we took the path across fields to emerge beside the Packhorse pub, where many of the party took refreshment.
Only 6.5 miles but a very pleasant walk. Thanks to all who came along.
