7Seven members started from the Cutthroat Bridge parking,
under a cloudy sky with a cool breeze. We headed south
under Hordron Edge before heading up towards Stanage Edge
following the line of grouse butts. We turned onto the
bridleway running below the edge, which led us to Stanage
End and a sheltered spot by an old wall, for our coffee
break. After the break we walked along the top of the edge
to the A57 road. On the way we passed a fair-sized group
who were doing a 15-mile charity walk in aid of Macmillan
Cancer Support. After crossing the main road, we continued
past Moscar Lodge to reach the Moscar Cross, actually an
ancient stone guide stoop to aid travellers. The four names
carved on the stone, Sheffield, Hathersage, Bradfield and
Hope, are places reached in the directions of the four
sides of the stone. From here, we descended to Moscar Cross
Road and past Moscar House to reach a crossing of paths
where we ate lunch by a wall. One member of the party left
us here, and the remaining half dozen took the route up
onto Derwent Moor. We soon reached a challenging stile,
high and steep, but it was safely negotiated with care.
We ascended past more grouse butts and soon encountered an
even larger charity walk group from TransUnion who were
walking 25 miles to raise funds for Andysmanclub and the
Police Children’s Charity. We reached Derwent Edge and
headed down to Whinstone Lee Tor, from where a very
pleasant path returned us to Cutthroat Bridge. Several
species of bird were seen and identified on the walk,
including ring ouzel, lapwing, curlew and snipe.
Distance 7.3 miles with 1290 ft of ascent.
