!8 members assembled at our house in Bradwell, the early
birds getting the choice of parking spots. The conditions
were perfect: blue skies, no wind and mild temperature;
these conditions continued for the whole walk, making for
some excellent views. We started up Hungry Lane,
continuing on Top Hole Road and skirting Newwall Nook to
reach Outlands Quarry. By this time the President, who was
late arriving, caught us up and we were now a party of 19.
The road was taken to Moss Rake where another couple of
members joined us, making a total of 21 walkers.
We ascended Green Dale to join Batham Gate, on the line of
the old Roman Road from Buxton to Brough. A little farther
on we left the road and headed for the spoil heaps of an
old quarry, where we had our coffee break and admired the
view from the top. After a stroll across Bradwell Moor we
came to the track along the ridge separating Bradwell from
Peak Forest. This rose to the highest point on the walk
(465m) where we had our lunch break. There were great views
all around, but especially to Mam Tor, the Great Ridge, Win
Hill and Stanage Edge. As usual for this area, no other
walkers were seen, and some members of the party had not
been here before either. The track dropped gradually and
after negotiating a few yards of unpleasant mud (the only
mud encountered on the walk) we crossed a stile and couple
of fields to a track, leading to a path across fields and
several more stiles to reach the outskirts of Bradwell.
Having returned to our starting point, and noted that the
walk distance was just 6 miles, we enjoyed a tea party to
celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Thursday Walks.
Copious tea was consumed as well as cakes and other goodies
brought by participants. We were reminded of the old saying:
“Whatever the question, the answer is cake”. Andy & RosyBron’s pics
