14 of us met up just outside Winster, an area slightly off the radar for Thursday walks, on what promised to be a hot sunny day. The first section followed the Limestone Way with expansive views to the north. The DofEers were out in force and we encountered numerous groups before our coffee break. We then swung north and descended the open hillside towards Wensley Dale where lunch was taken on a convenient knoll. It was getting hot by now, so after a steep pull up into Wensley we were glad of the shade in Clough Wood. Some old workings in the wood also revealed a small memorial to five miners who died in a methane gas explosion in the 1880s. After leaving the woods we dropped back down to Winster where the village store awaited us with much needed ice cream and refreshments before the final climb back to the car park. 6.5 miles though it felt like more in the heat, but new paths for virtually everyone – thanks for coming.
