7 of us met at the allotted hour with a temperature of -0.5C and a fair degree of windchill.
Setting out along Baslow Edge we stopped to admire the view and noted some threatening clouds coming our way.Moments later we were engulffed in a snow shower.
Emerging from the shower we spotted Wellington’s Monument, but passed it to the west to pick up the woodland path below in brilliant sunshine. As we reached the descent to the stream a group of Hinds were spotted running up the hillside.
Crossing the A621, we followed the path through the birch woods below Gardom’s Edge and on towards Moorside Farm with a tea stop in the shelter of the prominent rock outcrop.
Over the road below “The Robin Hood” we continued past Dobb Edge negotiating a single thread of barbed wire blocking the footpath- by unhooking it from the fencepost-and then reached the entrance to the Chatsworth estate in another snow shower.Descending the hill we found a small clearing in the wood which provided a welcome shelter for lunch.
Lunch over we rejoined the path and turned south through the parkland passing a strange wooden structure that appeared to represent waves ,we then passed an even stranger “plane” with its cockpit bent downwards and its tail end a circular structure with balloons!
Baslow then welcomed us with its Green festooned with ,quite literally, hundreds of daffodills.
A steep climb then led out of the village to the Gorsebank Lane traversing below Baslow Edge to lead us back to the Curbar Car Park once more.
A curious day with snow showers inter spersed with bright sunny interludes and overall goodviews.
Thanks to those of you who came and for your company.
