23 people plus a dog assembled at our house in Bradwell.
There was a mixture of current members and former members
who were here for the 50th Anniversary Weekend. With this
number, perhaps it was just as well that several of the
regulars were away in Kalymnos. The first task was to get
everyone’s car onto our drive, a record of 10 (including
ours which was in the garage). We set off up Hungry Lane
onto Tophole Road in drizzle, and then across fields to
Coplow Dale and Little Hucklow where we paused for the
putting on of waterproof trousers. After a short walk up the
road (Castleton Lane) we reached High Rake where we paused
for lunch among the ruins of High Rake Mine. There are great
views from here usually, but not today. After everyone had
finished their sandwiches (except JB who thought it was the
coffee break) we continued east along the rake to Windmill.
A little farther on was Great Hucklow where we split into
two groups. The short distance walkers (party of five) headed
directly back to Bradwell (5.5 miles). The rest of us (a
party of 5) ascended through Great Hucklow Wood. Down,
across a muddy stream and up to Abney Grange. It was then a
walk in the mist across Abney Moor to Brough Lane where we
paused for a drink and a snack. We continued down the lane
before double backing past Bothams Farm and across the Grey
Ditch (thought to be a sixth century defensive earthwork) to
Bradwell traffic lights. A short pull up a snicket (known
locally as the Yeld) returned us to the start – a total
distance of just on 8 miles. After removing some very wet
waterproofs we were able to enjoy tea and delicious cakes
– a great start to the 50th Anniversary celebrations.
