Eighteen humans and a dog gathered at the not-yet-Pay&Display
parking near Fairholmes. The group included four “Thursday
walk virgins”. We were really lucky with the weather.
After indifferent weather in the last few days, we were
blessed with warm, dry and often sunny conditions all
day. We set off briskly along the road to Wellhead above
the drowned village of Derwent. An ascent of a sunken lane
brought us to Lanehead Farm and shortly after this we sat
by a wall for our coffee break and admired the views from
this spot. After the break we continued on the path which
soon became less steep as it headed towards Lost Lad. We
branched off before this, taking the gently rising path to
Bradfield Gate Head on Derwent Edge. A short distance away
was Back Tor, our high point of the day and the place for
our picnic lunch. Again, the views were great. Having
lunched we set off down the paved path, over Lost Lad and
down towards Derwent Reservoir which was reached after a
steep descent of Hollin Clough. Finally, we dropped down by
the dam and strolled to Fairholmes where the end of the
walk was declared, giving participants the option of
heading back to their cars or lingering for an ice cream
from the café. Distance 7.5 miles. 1330 ft of ascent.
