Meet between 10 – 11 Grindleford Cafe
Finish. 3.15 – 4pm : Foxhouse Pub.A navigatioinal / treasure hunt over Longshaw, Higgar Tor area, Lawrencefield and White Edge. The only rules are to turn up at Grindleford Caff to get instructions between 10 and 11 and to meet back at the Fox House from 3.15pm. The event is not meant to be earnest and there will be no winners or losers. There will be treasure awarded for all taking part. Highlights could include prehistoric sites, industrial archaeology , mystical birch forests, stoop stones, views, scrambling on Lawrencefield or watching your mate sink ankle deep in bog – up to you. There’s also a chance to practice navigational skills .
The idea of the day is to get points. You can get points by navigating your way to one or more checkpoints, by taking photos of pre-determined items or even by visiting local pubs and cafes. Primarily designed for walkers the treasure hunt could also be done on bikes or cars (especially if you just want to focus on the pubs) if you are prepared to get off your transport and walk short distances into the bush. Car users will probably be deducted points in lieu of carbon tax, unless you can argue your case.
Once at Grindleford Caff, you will be given a photocopied map (1.50k) showing a range of “check points” across the area. Each check point has a different score. You will then have to plot a route taking in checkpoints, you chose the route. There is a question to answer at each checkpoint. You may well decide to drive to a different start point (i.e back up to the free parking near the Foxhouse). There will also be a list of items to photograph, these photos also earn you points. Up to you what you do for lunch: bring sandwiches or have a leisurely lunch in the Grouse, Checkers, Millstone or the Longshaw cafe etc.
Bring a 1;25k map and pen/pencil and paper (maybe in a plastic bag if raining). You may also need a plastic bag for your instruction sheet.
Extra points for anyone travelling by train and counting on getting a lift / bus back home from the Fox House .
It is best to do this in small groups max 4 . I’ll leave it up to you to sort out a team, but Bill (with no inside knowledge) may be looking for mates.
Let me know if you are coming, am happy to answer any questions
