8.15 am saw seven of us in Rowsley waiting for the bus to Topley Pike and the start of our walk. Lynda was waiting for us and we made an easy start along the Monsal Trail. We were all wondering if the stepping stones in Cheedale would be under water, given the amount of rain during previous days. Fortunately, we were OK allowing us to enjoy one of the most dramatic sections of river where the water has cut deeply into harder limestone leaving overhanging cliffs.
Slippery and muddy footpaths took us to Millers Dale Station and our first stop. We followed the minor road by the river to Litton Mill, passing a number of climbers hanging off Ravenstor on the way. More muddy paths to Water cum Jolly, looking beautiful in the sunshine. After a look over the Monsal Head viaduct, lunch was taken beside the river giving Helen time for a dip. We continued through Ashford and on to Bakewell and ice creams. The Weather Gods decided we had enjoyed plenty of sunshine and gave us a heavy shower for 20 minutes. The final stretch followed the river before climbing behind Haddon Hall the descending again to Rowsley and the confluence of the Wye and Derwent.
A mainly flat walk of about 18 miles with some great limestone scenery. Thank you to those who shared the day with me and a special mention to Kim and Mark, prospective members who joined us. David.
