A group of club members, and one none member, entered this year’s Rab Mountain Marathon held in Snowdonia in late September. A 2 day fell running and navigating event covering the stunning Glyderau and Carneddau mountains. Teams and individuals had to navigate from the start to the overnight camp, collecting as many points as possible on route, without going over the allotted time limit. Then on day 2, repeat the process back to the finish.
Gary and Nigel tackled the challenge with with their usual outstanding resolve, carrying heavy packs containing the buffet and bar for the overnight camp. They slightly misjudged things on the first day, losing all their points, after arriving a bit late back to camp. However, spirits were not dampened as the pair threw an almighty banquet party that evening. Cocktails were flowing, luminous balloons, paper plates and serviettes, pineapple and cheese on cocktails sticks – we wanted for nothing while other competitors were left wondering how the duo had carried al that catering!
Simon and Paul took things a slightly more seriously, finishing 82nd out of 170 at the end of the first day. Covering 10 miles in 6 hours with 1275m of ascent and gaining 90 points over some extremely challenging terrain.
Gary and Nigel, like a pair of modern day, Jack Daniels toting, rambling revolutionaries, decided to sack the point scoring thing altogether, and just enjoy a nice stroll in the hills back to the finish.
Simon and Paul decided to put them themselves through the mill yet again; covering 11 miles in 5 hours with 1300m of ascent and scoring 50 points (they lost 30 points for arriving 15 minutes over their allotted time). They finished 102nd out of 170 over all and were generally happy with their first ever MM.
An awesome weekend and a great challenge, testing all manner of mountain knowledge and hill craft and a broad range of catering skills. Can’t wait for next year!!!
