John Starey has just let me know that Pete Mann died last Sunday. Pete was a member of the club in the early 1990s, and taught at Sheffield Hallam University. He later moved to Birmingham, and retired back to his native Scotland several years ago. He was a determined bogtrotter and Munro-bagger, often trudging miles across bleak moorland in torrential rain in order to reach some obscure “top”, while the rest of the party had already retired to the pub (though he soon made up for lost drinking time).

John has had a text message from Pete’s sister. It seems that Pete had been diagnosed recently with advanced cancer, which had already spread to his liver, and he was not ill for long. There are no funeral details as yet, but John has asked Pete’s sister to let him know.

The photo (on the website) shows Pete on the Dubh Slabs above Loch Coruisk at Easter 2003.
