ParticipantI’m not sure that this was an official meet, but fun was had and it was suggested that a report might stimulate interest in more outings of this nature.
Three intrepid moon-taineers set off from Mytham Bridge around 9pm, having arrived by various devious routes as Hathersage Main Street had been closed. Although still light when we set off it had faded by the time we reached the open slopes near the top of Win Hill and we looked back to see a glorious coppery golden moon rising into a clear sky and lighting our way to the summit. The last moon of spring according to our accompanying celestial expert who then descended back to his car, having only come to enjoy this part of the evening. The remaining two members continued on to Kinder, though it turned out to somehow be further than expected by moonlight. We finally deployed headtorches on the final rocky ascent up the edge, then proceeded to try and work out which indeterminate gloomy lump was actually Madwoman’s Stones. We chose one as by this stage it was around 1am and we were so knackered that we didn’t actually care whose stones they were and and quickly bivvied down for the night.
Despite the cool temperatures we both slept and woke to the dawn for a thermos of tea and some snacks. One member diligently packed up then looked round to see the other had promptly fallen asleep again. Eventually we were both heading for the trig point on Blackden Edge which gleamed enticingly in the glorious morning light but never actually seemed to get any closer. Finally arriving, conversation turned to a nearby aircraft wreck which one of us had never been able to find. So that was duly investigated before dropping down Ringing Roger into Edale for a much needed pot of tea and some pastries at the station cafe. From there, one person with later commitments caught the train back to Bamford while the other continued on via Hollins Cross, Lose Hill, and the Roman fort at Brough.
A great trip, thanks Geoff and John!
