Many of the regulars were involved elsewhere, so a select party of four set out from below Mam Tor and headed into the strong cool breeze towards Peak Forest. Perry Dale provided shelter and a break was taken at the start of the Rake Vein, the remains of which stretch for about 1km. This was an area where lead ore was extracted from vertical veins in the underlying rock.
Sparrowpit was reached with it’s tiny ‘Bennetts Well’, whose waters eventually reach the Mersey and the Irish Sea!
Lunch was taken in the shelter of a wall before continuing along field paths to Rushup Edge. With the wind at our backs and the sun now shining we were able to admire the expansive views as we returned to our starting point.
