Meet at 10am at Wetton Car Park, GR 109552, White Peak Map. If coming from Sheffield, easiest to go through Bakewell and Monyash and down. Car Park well signed in village next to toilets. Car sharing would be advisable as it is a popular place on a Sunday, and rightly so. We have 2 spaces in our car and will be leaving home at 9am.
The walk consists of 2 very interesting hilly loops, of about 6.5 miles each, so come for one or other or both, each with plenty of interest- each only crossing the actual valley and not really walking in it!
The first loop takes us South and steeply down to Beeston Farm , and the amazing climbing there. Then up to the Old Throwley Hall ruins with magnificent views. The limestone peaks are very dramatic. Down to the river and up to Castern Hall, used, then contouring along the top edge of the woods and nature reserve, past disused lead mines and back to Wetton.
The second loop sees the dramatic Thor’s Cave a mere 15 min walk away, and probable lunch stop so time to explore. Then down steeply to the valley and up to Grindon, to the ‘cathedral of Staffordshire’ and along and down to Wetton Mill, teashop/toilet. Finishing up Wetton hill, we can savour the views before getting back to Wetton. Bring picnic and hopefully we won’t need a head torch, but the clocks will have changed……Linda.
