12 members (including one recovering from a broken wrist
sustained on a previous Club meet) assembled at the layby where
the Rushup road crosses the Pennine Bridleway. The conditions
were bright and sunny, with particularly clear air, and
quite windy. We headed northwest along the Pennine Bridleway
(known hereabouts as the Roych Track). After two and a half
miles we reached the foot of South Head amid mutterings
about a coffee break. 10 of us climbed to the top and were
greeted by breezy conditions and great views. After descending
back to the track, we enjoyed our delayed break before
heading off westward towards Kinder, crossing several boggy
sections. We soon reached a stile and the paved section of the
path. After a mile or so, we climbed a stile to reach the paved
path up to Brown Knoll. A wet and snow-lined grough provided
a little shelter from the wind, where we had our picnic. On
to the trig point which provided a photo-opportunity. We
wandered southeast along the gradually descending path, enjoying
the views. This section is now all paved, which makes it much
more pleasant and easy than the boggy stretch it used to
be. We reached Chapel Gate and turned southwest to the road
and back to the cars. The walk and climb up South Head were
a bit out of our usual area, and enjoyed by some who had not
been there before. We were lucky with the weather.
Andy.
