The committee has drawn up communication guidelines. They are linked to the members’ section on the web page. I thought they were worth summarising as I expect most people won’t have read them.
On Whatsapp – make sure messages are specific to the group. E.g. use ‘climbing outdoors’ for who is climbing when and where.
Whatsapp groups are set up for away meets to facilitate car share, cooking, other arrangements specific to the meet and sharing photos. These groups will generally be taken down a couple of weeks after the meet.
General announcements, such as new members who have joined, go on the ‘announcements’ group. These can be put on by one of the WhatsApp Community administrators (presently Lorna Nicholson, Paul Embley, Mary Reape).
Stuff that’s not specific to any group goes on ‘Chat’.
Information for everybody, such as this message, can go on the message board. Make sure it is relevant to 120 members. Don’t reply to all 120 unless they really need to know! It’s normally best to reply to the person who wrote it [personal email addresses are in the list linked to the members’ section of the web site].
Whatsapp can also be used to send messages directly back to the sender.
Avoid posting on divisive cultural, political or religious topics which could give offence. If in doubt, leave these for the pub. [In the past I’ve done this; easily done].
Basically; stick to what is relevant, constructive and kind.
Any questions – ask someone on the committee.
If you are interested – a new environmental policy and a complaints procedure are also linked to the same section of the web site.
Best wishes
Geoff
