Rain, wind, hail and sunshine – we had them all today.
10 members assembled, eventually, at the foot of Winnats Pass,
at the published grid reference, though there had been some
confusion. We set off along the Mam Tor road and soon turned
uphill past Treak Cliff Cavern. The strong wind threatened
to throw us off balance in places. The terrain levelled
off and we passed Blue John Cavern; the path led, in the
teeth of the wind, to the old quarry at Windy Knoll (which
was certainly living up to its name) where we took a
cofffee break and Rosy handed out delicious birthday cake.
The rain held off for the break but a blizzard awaited us
as we climbed out of the quarry. We took the track past
Rowter Farm, where drilling was taking place, apparently
for a geothermal scheme. Crossing the Limestone Way, we
soon began to descend towards Bradwell. The going was easier
now as we had the wind behind us. We found a sheltered spot
behind a wall for lunch. A DofE party was making heavy
weather towards us, struggling with their heavy packs
against the wind. After lunch, a short walk took us to the
top of Smalldale. Here we were greeted by a fierce
hailstorm. We made a detour to the quarry viewpoint, which
was new to most members of the party. We descended to the
outskirts of Bradwell before picking up the right of way
through the cement works. We soon arrived back in Castleton.
Thanks to all who came. 7.7 miles, 1130 ft of ascent.
