Two parties started from Far Lane, Barlow. One group walked clockwise, one anti-clockwise. Thanks to Mike for leading one of the groups. We had stunning weather with a cloudless blue sky and extensive visibility, helped by the lack of leaves on the trees. There were large areas of Celandine and Wood Anemone with a few Bluebells just appearing,
The walk was about 7.5 miles and passed 8 historic halls in a circumnavigation of Millthorpe , passing through woodland and farmland, often on very ancient tracks. A memorable day.
The ancient settlement of Holmesfield, straggling along it’s ridge line was visible from most of the route. Obscure fact of the day: East from St Swithin’s Church, Holmesfield at 260 metres/860 feet above sea level, there is no higher land until the Central Russian Highlands 150 km SE of Moscow!

There’s a great chapter in Bill Bryson’s book “At Home” about the evolution of “The Hall” covering 1600 years or so, including a section about Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth House, as well as “Grubenhous” and their development which gave rise to the word “Hall”, one of the first truly English words after 410.
