Eight people set off from Bolsterstone zig zagging into the Ewden Valley, stopping at the dam, across Broomhead Reservoir, to admire the light reflections and dancing white horses. After coffee, and lunch in Broomhead Park, with far reaching views to the flatlands of Doncaster area, we descended to Broomhead Bridge. A mass blackberry pick followed, as we climbed through scrubby meadows and woods towards The Height and Salter Hills. The last 2km along the ridge of Heads Lane led us directly back to the church at Bolsterstone. Warm sunny temperatures and a blustery wind helped us round 7 miles, with great company as always. We finished with a feeling that this beautiful, unpopulated valley has a lot more to offer.

There is some interesting information on the internet regarding the history of Broomhead Hall and Farm. Also the Stocksbridge and District Historical Soc. Archive contains fascinating old photographs showing life in the valley before and around the time of the building of the reservoir.
