A cool, blustery wind greeted us at Ringinglow and hats and gloves were quickly donned, but as we strode into the sunshine along Houndkirk Road the temperature began to rise. At the road’s high point we turned east and followed a path through heather to our coffee stop on Houndkirk Hill. The views were extensive over Sheffield’s leafy suburbs, and even Lincoln Cathedral was visible on the distant horizon. We re-joined the path and descended to cross the A6187. The path then led us down through pleasant woodland, which forms part of the Blacka Moor Reserve. After crossing stepping stones a gradual ascent brought us to a clearing at Lenny Hill and the junction of several paths. Basking in sunshine and sheltered from the breeze we took advantage of two benches and stopped for lunch, after which we continued our climb to the main road. Here, at the junction with Stony Ridge Road, is the marker stone on the site of the old toll house.
We crossed the road and a short path took us to the Houndkirk Road. Again the views were magnificent, although dark clouds were beginning to gather at the head of the Hope Valley. With the breeze on our backs and in bright sunshine we ambled back to our starting point. Thanks to the party of 13 and Poppy for coming along and enjoying 8.2 miles.
Sean.
